The difference between these two pictures? About 30 minutes. Kids need time to warm up.
If you've searched for family photography, you've probably come across the term “mini session.” They’re usually advertised as short, affordable photo sessions—often just 15 to 20 minutes—with back-to-back bookings scheduled one after the other. And while they might seem convenient, I want to share why I don’t offer them… and why that’s ultimately a benefit to you and your family.
Real Moments Take Time
After years of photographing families on the beach, I’ve learned something important: the best moments rarely happen in the first 15 minutes. Kids are still warming up, parents are still adjusting, and everyone is a little unsure of what to expect. It’s completely normal! That’s why I build in time—for all of us to breathe, settle in, and let go of any pressure.
So many of my favorite images— the quiet connections, the genuine joy, those big belly laughs—happen near the end of our session. That’s when everyone relaxes, trusts the process, and starts to have fun. It’s not something that can be rushed, and certainly not something that fits neatly into a “mini” window.
It’s Not Just About the Smiles—It’s Also About the Light
I schedule nearly all of my sessions around the golden hour, when the sun is low and the light is soft and magical. But here’s the thing: the light changes dramatically from minute to minute. If I were to offer mini sessions around golden hour, that first family is going to end up in a harsher light. The second family might end up getting that that dreamy, golden glow, and the last might be in near-darkness. A few minutes delay, or a sad little one can throw off the schedule entirely. There's no room for flexibility, no room for fun. That’s not fair to anyone—and it’s not the kind of consistency or quality I want to offer.
By committing to one family per sunset, I can focus entirely on giving you the best possible conditions, both in terms of light and experience.
Who Really Benefits From Mini Sessions?
Let’s be honest—mini sessions are designed to benefit the photographer. They’re efficient. They’re profitable. They’re a way to squeeze in more bookings with less effort per client. But that’s not why I got into this work.
I want to create portraits that feel timeless, joyful, and personal. That doesn’t come from rushing through a checklist or keeping an eye on the clock. It comes from connection, from conversation, from giving your family space to be yourselves.
What I Offer Instead
Rather than mini sessions, I offer full-length, relaxed portrait sessions designed to focus on your family—not a preset schedule. You’ll have time to warm up, explore the beach, play with your kids, and enjoy the experience. No pressure, no rush, and no competing for the best light.
We’ll start when the light is just beginning to soften and shoot until it fades into dusk. And along the way, we’ll capture the in-between moments—the ones that really matter.
The Result?
Images that reflect your family as you really are: connected, relaxed, and glowing in the best light of the day. Not rushed, not posed, not crammed into a slot between other families.
If that sounds like the kind of experience you’re looking for, I’d love to connect. Get in touch to learn more about booking your session—I promise it’ll be worth taking the time.
